4 bad habits that are sucking your productivity
In today’s fast-paced, hectic world, it’s more important than ever that we are productive at work. But did you know that many of the things we do to try and boost our activity, are actually reducing your productivity without you even realising?
Here are just some of the habits that are making you less productive, and how you can avoid them…
Saying yes to every meeting that comes your way
Although some meetings are essential and unavoidable, many of them are not. And did you know that the average person wastes 31 hours in meetings per month?
Unnecessary meetings come in all shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common – they can have a huge impact on your productivity.
So, before you open up your calendar to schedule yet another meeting, ask yourself if you actually need to attend and, if you have multiple requests, try to schedule them in bulk so that you don’t need to be constantly stopping and starting the project you’re working on.
Constantly checking your emails
Although it might feel like constantly checking your emails is enhancing your productivity (after all, your clients must be really impressed when they receive your reply within 30 seconds, right?), in actual fact, constantly checking your inbox is actually hampering your productivity.
To achieve optimum productivity, you need to give your full concentration to the task in hand, and that means no distractions! Although checking and responding to your emails might seem like a legitimate workplace distraction, if you stop what you’re doing every few minutes to deal with the latest addition to your inbox, you will soon find that your productivity drops substantially.
So, rather than checking your emails constantly and replying to them as soon as they come in, instead set aside 5 minutes every hour or even 2 hours to check your emails and respond to any that have come in. You’ll be amazed at how much more productive you’ll be!
Whether you don’t like eating early in the morning or you value your beauty sleep too much to get up early and grab breakfast, there are a whole host of reasons why many of us don’t eat breakfast on a regular basis.
But, if you want to help ensure that you are able to tackle the day ahead and be as productive as possible, eating a good breakfast is absolutely essential! A healthy breakfast that you have enough fibre, protein, vitamins, and minerals to get you through the morning can help you be as productive as possible. So make sure you take 10 minutes out of your morning to enjoy a nice healthy breakfast – trust me, you’ll notice your productivity increase in no time at all.
When your to-do list is a mile long, it can be tempting to try and do a million things at once in order to get them done quicker. But, by splitting your time, attention, and resources across multiple tasks at any one time, it’s highly likely that you will actually end up getting far less done as your concentration dips in and out of each job.
So prioritise your work and tackle one job at a time. And no-multitasking also applies to social media, your phone, and your emails too! When you’re on the phone or in a meeting, pay full attention to the person you’re speaking to, rather than trying to respond to emails or keep track of your social media at the same time.
With so many of us facing increasingly hectic working days, it’s more important than ever that we use our time as productivity as possible and ditching these bad habits is a great place to start!
